About

I am an associate professor and the director of graduate studies in the Drake University School of Journalism and Mass Communication. My work is driven by my love for media, and I’m always excited to to talk to people about what media they’re passionate about and find meaningful.

My research examines how algorithms shape people’s experiences online and how media producers think about algorithms in their creative decision-making. A large amount of my research is driven by my work as a research affiliate at the Center for Publics, Platforms, & Personalization (CP3).You can read my publications in flagship media and communication journals, including but not limited to New Media & Society, Social Media + Society, and the International Journal of Communication.

I teach classes in media studies, advertising, and communication leadership. My teaching blends theory and practice by focusing on experiential learning, and I regularly bring local, community-oriented client projects into the classroom.

I hold a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Wichita State University and a doctorate degree from the University of Iowa. No, I didn’t plan to only attend schools that have yellow and black color schemes.

Outside of work, I write music under the moniker Twin Cities and pursue a range of creative work.
